The Leprosy Awareness Cricket Carnival 2025

The Leprosy Awareness Cricket Carnival 2025, held on 5 November 2025, was organized by
the Alliance Development Trust in collaboration with the Colombo Municipal Council, uniting the
power of sport with a vital public health mission. With the participation of over 45 teams from
multiple districts and an impressive turnout of more than 2,000 participants and attendees, the
event showcased strong national engagement and community solidarity.

Aimed at merging sportsmanship with leprosy awareness in Sri Lanka, the carnival featured a
men’s cricket tournament and a women’s netball tournament, drawing enthusiastic crowds and
fostering unity across regions. In addition, a dedicated Leprosy Awareness and Screening
Booth offered education, early detection opportunities, and essential health information. A
livelihood stall led by Persons Affected by Leprosy highlighted empowerment and inclusion,
while families enjoyed vibrant children’s activities such as bouncy castles, face painting, kebab
stalls, and interactive games.

Before the matches commenced, participating teams were trained and encouraged to spread
leprosy awareness within their churches and districts, strengthening the reach of the message
beyond the event grounds.

The carnival was honored by the presence of the Mayor of Colombo, Her Excellency Vraîe Cally
Balthazaar, whose attendance underscored the national importance of addressing leprosy.
Overall, the Leprosy Awareness Cricket Carnival 2025 was a resounding success, bringing
together diverse stakeholders to promote early detection, reduce stigma, and inspire collective
unity in Sri Lanka’s ongoing battle against leprosy.
